THIS IS SERIOUS

Meet our lovely cat, Sugar. She is 5 years old and we brought her out from California. She adjusted well but she became a bit of a fraidy cat and decided that she doesn't like the outdoors. She is super loving at night and sleeps with Madison under her covers. We love her.

This is our living room, particularly our couch. It's for sitting on. Steve sometimes falls asleep here, we watch movies while snuggled up on it, it matches the room and the other pieces. We love this couch.

While we were in California last month, Sugar decided that she would use it as a litter box. We saw the spot and the scratches where she tried to cover it up, with what, I don't know. ( I did that once in my sleep when I was 4. it was the chair next to my mom's bed ) We immediately bought some stuff from Petsmart to get rid of the odor but because it is leather, it didn't work so well. What's worse is the SHE KEEPS ON DOING IT!!

Now I know what you're thinking...why is she still alive? It's a $1200 couch and we ask ourselves the same thing but unless you have a child that has a pet, you wouldn't understand. We are trying to solve the problem with alternative methods.

We are at the point where we have to get rid of the couch. Cat pee is totally gross and it's not coming out. ( anyone want a couch? ) The current delimma is this: Do we get a new couch and hope that she won't do it again? Do we give her another chance? Maybe she was just mad that we were gone.

She freaks out when we put her outside. There are foxs ( plural ) that live in the woods and she is dainty so I don't know how long she would last. She stands by the door and constantly meow's.

Anyone want a cat?

Has anyone had this problem before? I'm open to suggestions.

Well I'm of the general persuasion that cats are all evil. :) But I understand the pet/kid thing. But even if you get a new couch she will keep doing it, probably.

Hmmm, I'll take your couch. What's a little cat pee? Couches for sitting on? What a concept!

You can slap me when you see me.

Gosh, who is to say that the cat won't pee on the new one? You know how they have those puppy training pee pads? I wonder if they have something for cats to pursuade them to go in the liter box. Or, they're is always catnip!

I'm kidding. Have you called your vet?

I check in on your blog from time to time. My name is Melanie, and Im a blog stalker : ) Yours is one of the 10 (made up of mostly friends who post the latest on their children) that I love to check out when I need a smile or a break at work : ). I read your posting about the trouble youre having with your cat. As an animal lover myself, I can totally understand your and Madisons attachment to her and was hoping I might be able to help with a solution!

I dont know much about cats (more of a dog person), but have heard of this spray that might deter her from getting on your couch. Its probably worth a shot.

I was also thinking that, maybe, if you temporarily move her litter box close to the couch, she will begin using it again, and then you can gradually move it back to a more ideal spot. Has she been checked for a UTI? They can make even the best animals use the restroom in bizarre places! Your vet might also be able to offer some ideas. Hope this helps.

Have you ruled out medical issues? You might want to take her to the vet to make sure she doesn't have a UTI or some other issue that is causing her to do this. If not, I would say it is stress related. Try cleaning out her litter box more often, and adding new litter boxes so she has a choice. Different types of litter boxes (covered, uncovered, top hole, etc) might also be worth a shot. You can also try different types of litter. There is stuff called Cat Attract which is made for this very reason. If none of these work, you can try Feliway plugins, which I think you can get from the vet - basically, its like an air freshener plug in but it emits a happy drug for cats that calms them down. It's only about $5 a month, so it shouldn't break the bank.

Good for you for not giving up on her. Far too many people give up their animals due to an inconvenience. Unfortunately, a cat that pees on furniture is not likely to get adopted and would probably be euthanized at a shelter.

We used Feliway, a cat pheromone spray found at pet stores, when our cat peed on our bed and it worked well.

I'd say get a new couch and some Feliway.

Good luck!

Update. Momma's log, 8:48 pm eastern time.
Just got back from Petsmart where for $42 you can get a room diffuser that is supposed to make all felies in my house blissful and litter box cooperative. The bonus is that if it doesn't work I can take it back and get a refund and then shoot her.
Just kidding.
I am hopeful! The vet is the next step to eliminate a UTI but I PRAY TO GOD that the problem will be taken care of.
Thanks for all of the feline love and I will be sure to keep ya'll posted.

Keep a spray bottle filled with water in the living room. When she comes in gently spray water @ her to teach her living room and/or couch is off limits. Cats hate water & water spray. It worked for Mr. Cat. & very inexpensive & its not inhumane. With all these suggestions something is sure to work. Sugar just missed you while you were gone & wants to teach "you" a lesson. Cats are like that.

Okay Shawna,

This happened to me and Aaron. We went out of town for 6 weeks of job training. We had a house/pet sitter. When we came back, our cat Simon sprayed ALL OVER the house. We had brand spanking new carpet. He sprayed all over the kitchen counters, everywhere you can think of. There was nothing we could do about it. We had to get rid of him. However, we didn't have kids back then! For Madi's sake, I hope you find a solution. Love you Madi! Love all of you! Enjoyed your visit. Make sure you let us know when you'll be back...some time in December for the arrival of our next miracle and blessing???? :)

One more thing...I am sure if you drive the couch to Aaron's house, he'll put it in his backyard for all of us to sit on at Sunday BBQs! :)
